Burce Cotten = "As We Were"
Samuel Cotten, second son of the above Samuel, located himself in Edgecombe County where he bought a plantation from William Bell in 1786. He became a large planter and was a man of gentility and highly respected. In 1795, at the death of his wife, he divided his estate among his several sons and one daughter and shortly thereafter followed her into the beyond.

"Uncle Ned" was a professional visitor all his life moving from relative to relative. One cold winter evening carrying his "Fiddle" and "Portmanteau" he slipped on the slippery road falling and breaking his hip. Some black people found him lying in the road and proposed that they move him to the nearest house which was the home of the Mosely sisters. Uncle Ned protested firmly, "No! I would rather lie right here in the road than be talked to death by those two old gossips!" They let him stay right where he was and there he died.

8. Alexander who died in Edgecombe 1823 who married 1. Temperance Staton and had Arthur Staton Cotten (more) married 2. Mary Cotten daughter of William son of William and they had Mary Elizabeth C. who married Henry Downing of Washington Co.
