Records of Estates Edgecombe County, North Carolina 1761-1825 Vol I:
(198) Roderick Cotton:
Petition (Nov. 1815) for year's provisions by the widow Toppin Cotton, stating he died intestate. Year's provisions allotted to the WIDOW and THREE CHILDREN, Nov.,1815. Petition ( Aug 1820) for a division of land by Benjamin Anderson and Nancy his wife, formerly Nancy Coleman, stating they were tenants in common with the heirs of the dec'd. and Rebecca Coleman of 180 acres on White Oak Swamp adj. to Dempsey Bryan and Exum Lewis. For the division James Bradley was appointed guardian of the heirs. There was a statement of expenditures by Alexander Cotton, administrator from 1815 to 1826. Statement showing payments made for the maintenance of the children of the dec'd: John L. Cotton, Edward S. Cotton, and Elizabeth King, formerly Elizabeth Cotton. ( Money was also paid for the support of Samuel E. Cotton but he was not listed as a child.)
Petition (1831) to sell certain lands owned by the dec'd. Stating he died possessed of land on White Oak Swamp adjacent Dempsey Bryan and Mrs. Rhoda Read, leaving a widow and three children. The widow had sold her dower right of 60 acres to Godwin Cotton. File contains numerous depositions relative to the settlement of the estate, most are dated 1840 and 1841. Deponents were Henry Bryan, Henry Adams, Robert Sorey, Edmund D. Macnair, Michael Hearn, Drew Austin, Arthur S. Cotton, Joseph R. Lloyd, Charles W. Knight, William Jones, Canady Howell, Mrs. Mary Exum, Benjamin Anderson, John P. Stewart, John Bradley and Eli Porter. The records indicate Elizabeth King ( daughter of the deceased) was the wife of Drew King.
Petition (July, 1841) by JOHN L. COTTON, EDWARD S. COTTON and ELIZABETH KING (children of the deceased) stating that Alexander Cotton had been administrator of the dec'd and had hired out his slaves until his own death in 1827. At that point their kinsman Spencer D. Cotton took possession of the slaves and managed them until his death in 1837, when William Wills and John W. Cotton were appointed his administrators. Petitioners state they are entitled to an undivided 1/7 share of a one-half share of a large sum of money which they never received. File contains further depositions for this case, most dated 1842, by Mrs. Nancy Braswell, William Jones, John L. Cotton and Randolph Cotton. A deposition (1842) by Henry King states that some of the slaves in question were taken to Florida by Theophilus Hyman. File also contains the deposition (June 1840) of Thomas Cotton of Franklin Co, Alabama, a brother of the said Roderick Cotton.
(My note: BJC: Some sources claim that this Thomas Cotton was the same as Micajah Thomas Cotton, however, Micajah Thomas Cotton, Roderick's brother, died 1834 in Talladega Co., Alabama)
