SEAWARDS MILLS HISTORY, VASSALBORO MAINE
Giles Seward was listed on the 2nd census of Vassalborough in 1800. He built a house still standing (have copy of photos from Vassalboro Historical Society (88.6.45 & 88.6.62 & 88.6.63) in 1787. The “Sowards” without doubt referring to the “Seward” or “Seaward” family (who developed the mills at the inlet to Webber Pond)…..settled on the east side of Webber Pond. (History of Vassalborough Maine, p. 51).
In 1808 the Will of Giles Se(a)ward (History of Vassalborough Maine, page 61) left “to
daughter Abigail Tarbell $100, to sons John, Wentworth L., Samuel G., Daniel Seward $100. apiece, to daughters Betsy Seward, Polly, Maria Seward $1 apiece as soon as of age 21 years.” The estate consisted of the homestead dwelling, sawmill, gristmill and shop, pew in the Baptists Meeting House, and the personal estate of 1 pair pantaloons, 1 greatcoat, 4 waistcoats, library and 1 Holy Bible. There was a long list
of “notes due”.
“…....Will of John Se(a)ward 1824 , being weak in body but of sound and perfect mind
and memory, ……give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Betsey Seward $150. In addition to her third, I also give, grant and bequeath unto my aged Grandmother Elizabeth Grant a good and suitable maintenance at my house during her natural life. I also give and grant unto my two daughters Elizabeth and Mary $150 to be
paid out of my personal property at the age of 18 years and the use of one room so long as either of them remain single and lasterly as to the rest of my estate Real and Personal of what kind or nature soever I do give and bequeath unto my only son Samuel” ……..The estate consisted of farm and stock, farming tools, homestead and household goods, grist mill,
