1765 21 Mar. George Wimberly and wife, Morning (X) Wimberly, of Edgecombe Co. to Josiah Murphree of same. For £50 a tract of 500 acres on Philip’s Branch adjoining Proctor, Benjamin Hart, and Joshua Wombwell, it being part of a tract of land said Wimberly bought of one Richard Swanson. Wit: Aquilla Sugg, Wm. Haywood. Mourning Wimberly was examined separately concerning her right of dower by Dempssey Grymes, Esq. Deed Book C, p. 319.

1765 5 July. George Wimberly, the Elder, of Edgecombe Co. to John Philips of same, for £5 10s, Virginia money a tract of 70 acres on Saddle Pocosin Branch adjoining Enoch Lewis and Joshua Womble (Wombwell), it being part of a tract of 570 acres of wich said Wimberly had already conveyed the other 500 acres to Josiah Murphree by deed. Wit: Wm. Haywood, George Wimberly. Deed Book C, p. 333.

Hart's line west 216 poles to a pine then by Joshua Wombwell's line
south 232 poles to a corner then by Wombwell's otehr line 48 west (sic)
to a white oak in Philips Branch then down said branch to the
beginning, containing 500 acres, being part of a tract the aforesaid

1778, George Wimberly, Edge. Co to Josiah Murphree, county aforesaid
for 25 pds proc money, a lease on 220 acres on the north side of Tar
River and west side of the Grate Branch beginning at a red oak and gum
in the (Bider Branch) and runs west 174 poles to a pine the patent
corner then south 224 poles across a marsh to William Ellinor's corner
a pine then by Ellinor's line east 140 poles to a red oak Ellinor's
other corner on the Grate Branch aforesaid then along the courses of
the branch to the mouth of the (Reder Branch) aforesaid then along the
said (Rider Branch) to the beginning, being part of a tract of land in
the Wimberly patent at the upper end, for the lifetime of the said
Murphree and the lifetime of his wife, Pherebe Murphree and his son,
John Murphree and to pay said George Wimberly and his heirs yearly rent
of one barley corn, signed George Wimberly, wit Sherrod Haywood, Elisha

18 Nov 1776. 25pds proclamation. 220 acres which as part of the land in
WIMBERLYS patent, on the north side of Tar River & west side of Grate
Branch, joining Rider Branch, WILLIAM ELLINOR. The deed was for the
lifetime of sd JOSIAH MURPHREE & his wife FARABY & of his son JOHN
MURPHREE. Included was the payment of the quitrent to the Earl of
Granville. Wit: SHERWD HAYWOOD, ELISHA STALLINGS. Feb. Ct. 1778. Edward

"MURPHREE (MURFREE), JOSIAH, inventory taken by Jacob Battle, admr., no date, Feb. Ct. 1792. Account of sale by Jer'h Hilliard, D. Sheriff. Fereby Murphree was the principal buyer and John Murphree and Martha Murphree bought, Feb. Ct. 1792. Division of negroes among the following: (1) Feriby Murphree; (2) John Williams and wife, Feriby; (3) John Sumner and wife, Mary; (4) John Murphree; (5) Martha Murphree; (6) Malachi Murphree; (7) Matthew Murphree; (8) Elizabeth Murphree, the last three minors with Jethro Battle as guardian, March 27, 1792, May Ct. 1792. Account of sale by Presley Spinks, D. Sheriff, June 25, 1792, Aug Ct. 1792. Division of residue among the widow and seven children as named above, March 21, 1793, May Ct. 1793."

Administration is on motion granted to Jacob BATTLE on the estate of
Pherebe MURPHREE dec'd who was qualified & entered into Bond of £500 with
John SUMNER & Elisha BATTLE, Sec.

NOVEMBER, 1794:

Etheldred PHILIPS, John BATTLE, Abishai HORN, Hartwell PHILIPS &
Frederick PHILIPS are appointed to divide the lands of Josiah MURPHREE,
dec'd between John, Maluchi & Matthew MURPHREE, sons of the dec'd & make
return to the next court.

Edge. Co. Db 10, page 207, deed date 7 Feb 1800, recorded Feb Ct 1802,
Edward Pitman, Edge. Co to Malicy Murphree, county aforesaid for 175
pds specie, a tract of land in the fork of Town Creek on the north side
of the Great Swamp beginning at a gum in the said swamp at the run then
north along a line of marked trees to one prong of the Cabbin Branch a
maple corner then down the various courses of said branch to the mouth
where the branch empts into the Great Swamp then up the various courses
of said swamp to the first station, containing 158 acres, signed Edward
Pitman (X), wit J. Williams (proved), Barnaba Barron. Abstracted 22

recorded Nov Ct 1801, William Deloach & Sugg Fort, executors of Matthew
Williams dec'd have appointed Jacob Battle of Edge. Co as their lawful
attorney to act in our names as executors of the said Williams, dec'd,
signed Wm. Deloach, SUGG FORT, wit Matthew Murphree (proved). NOTE:
