John H. Smith was born in 1786 in Montgomery Co., KY, and served as a captain in the Virginia Militia during the War of 1812. He and his wife, Elizabeth Lyle, settled in St. Charles Co., MO, in 1819.
He served as County Court Judge along with Samuel Wells, Ruluff Peck, Moses Bigelow and John Taylor from 1826 to 1827. He was Justice of the Peace for the Dardenne TWP in 1837.
Smith served as postmaster at the Pomona post office from 15 September 1851 to 19 September 1854. The small town of Pomona is gone, but is believed to have been located in the vicinity of Smith’s home off Hwy D, near the water tower and what is now known as “The Crossroads.” It may have existed as a trading station along with the post office. The Captain John Smith Cemetery is located on property near the water tower that was owned for many years by John Kohler.

The following information was obtained July, 1997 from "The St. Charles Historical Society" from page 16, of what is probably a listing of cemeteries of St. Charles Co.,- Callaway Township, St. Charles County, MO.
THE CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH BURYING GROUNDS:
"Now called the Epstine Place. Buring ground through field back of frame house-fence-cedar trees-myrtle. Five very old headstones, marked only with initials. Dates obtained from Mr. Cunningham, Confederate Sol. Possibly MRS. SILVEY of Cottleville or Bible-see records. Oct. 25, 1925."
(My Notes: Mrs. Silvey was Mamie Lee Tarbell, daughter of Josiah John Tarbell and Anna Sarah Peters. Mamie married Grovery Silvey)
I believe someone tried to identify the headstones initials to Capt. John Smith and Rebebecca Lyle. In the John Smith Bible Records it gives a son, John Halley Smith, and Robert Lyle Smith who both died young.
