BISHOP -STOKES OF PRINCE GEORGE AND SURRY, p 65
John Bishop, the first of his family in Virginia, settled in what is now Prince George County . In 1644, John Bishop was a Burgess for Charles City County . As " Captain " John Bishop he also served as a Burgess in 1652 ( B . J. ) . His son , John Bishop Jr. was a godson of Captain Thomas Pawlett (brother of the Marquis of Winchester ) who in his will dated Jan. 12, 643 /44 gave him one silver spoon , to Lieutenant Bishop, evidently his father, he gave 20 shillings On Oct. 16, 1643, Mr. John Bishop patented 891 acres in James City upon the head of David Jones Creek , E . N . E . from Mr. Howe' s uppermost plantation for the transportation of 18 persons among whom was his wife . This patent was transferred to Capt. Thomas Swann April 8 , 1650 (CP 148 ). On April 9, 1651, John Bishop patented 300 A on S . S . of Upper Chippoake Creek " commonly called Swan Bay " Due for transportation of 6 persons :JOHN , ELIZ . MARY and JOHN BISHOP, JR , and two others ( C . P . 231) . Captain Bishop died before Sept . 23, 1658 .
