MARGARET CULPEPPER, b. about 1481 as she was "aged 11 and more,” in 1492; m. (1) John Welbeck; m. (2) William Cotton, son of Sir Thomas Cotton of Landwade, co. Cambridge. A Culpepper pedigree* reverses the order of these two husbands, but her mother's will makes it certain that her first marriage was to Welbeck. The Leigh pedigree says that the first Sir John Leigh had an aunt, Thomasine, wife of John Welbeck of Putney,
and in view of the profitable way in which Sir John and Lady Leigh secured her daughter Joyce for Sir John's brother, it is very probable that a similar marriage was arranged for Joyce's sister Margaret and Sir John's cousin. With both husbands Margaret lived on the Culpepper manor of Oxenhothe, co. Kent.
