CHRISTOPHER STOKES (STOAKS, STOCKS, STOIKS, STOAKES)
On July 31, 1622, Christopher Stokes (Stoaks, Stocks, Stoiks, Stoakes) and his wife, Mary, set sail for Virginia on the James, at the expense of Merchant Edward Bennett. Their young son, William Stokes who was then age 3, probably accompanied them. The Virginia Company sent Christoher Stokes some bedding, a saw, and several containers of goods on behalf of the Society of Southampton Hundred, which suggests that he was to to go to their plantation, Southampton Hundred (44). Although the Stokes family was not included in the February 16, 1624, census, they appear to have been residents of Jamestown Island (1). where the family's presence is well documented. In late December 1624 Christopher Stokes served on the jury that conducted an inquest following a Jamestown Island child's drowining death, and 5 year old William Stokes was a witness in the case. By 1630 Christopher Stokes had moved to what later became Warwick County and represented the Denbigh (23) area as a burgess. In 1635 he patented some land in Elizabeth City (18) (FER 321, 322, 400: MCGC 38: HEN 1:139, 148; STAN 55, PB 1 Pt. 1:223, 264-265

ABSTRACTS OF VIRGINIA LAND PATENTS
(435) LIEUTENANT JOHN CHEESMAN, 200 acres at New Poquoson [York Co.], adjoining the lands of Christopher Stokes [I] and Thos. Ranshaw. Due for the transportation of four persons. By West, Dec. 22, 1636.
NOTE.
Christopher Stokes, who was probably of the family of Stokes, of Stanshawes, Gloucestershire, England (a family in which the name Christopher appears several times), came to Virginia before 1635, for we find that on the 21st day of July of that year he obtained a patent for 300 acres of land on the New Poquoson, in Charles river, afterwards York; and Aug. 16, 1637, 300 acres more adjoining, and on the 20th of May, 1638, 400 acres on Warwick river. He was a member of the House of Burgesses for " Warwicke River," in October, i629 (1Hening 1, 139), and for Deniby (in Warwick Co.) March, 1629-30 (lb., 1, 148), and died sometime before 1646, leaving Christopher, William, Francis and Thomas, his sons, surviving him, and a will, which does not remain of record, devising his estate to his said four sons, for in a record in the County Court of York, on the 25th of May, 1648, is this entry: " Whereas Christopher Stokes did, by his will, give to his sons Christopher, Wil- liam, Francis and Thomas his estate; whereas the said Thomas has since died, the court doth order that Edward Miles, guardian, do take charge," &c.
