"Thomas Cotton II and Jane Hyde Cotton appear to have had at least five sons and one daughter in the period of 1716 to 1728. In the period from 1729 to 1743, they had at least four more sons and one more daughter. Baptismal records survive for their seventh, eighth, and ninth sons and their youngest daughter. In 1744, Thomas Cotton II appears to have had an illegitimate son, Frederick Cotton, by a woman called Elizabeth Callum. (Frederick is not mentioned, however, in Thomas Cotton's will. He does seem to have survived, though, as there is a record of Frederick Cotton having married a Polly Christian in 1789.) The oldest child of Thomas Cotton II and Jane Hyde Cotton would have been John who would have been born in or about 1717. The second son was Thomas who would have been born in about 1720, give or take one year. The third son, Nathaniel would have been born in about 1723, give or take one year. The fourth son, William, would have been born in about 1725, give or take two year. The fifth son, Richard, would have been born in about 1727, give or take one year."
