Alexander was a store keeper. He ran Cotton Ferry on the Chowan River. The house was first known as "Outlaws", then "Barfield", 1735. South Quay is on the Blackwater River.

Precint. 18 April 1720 5 shillings lawful money of this Province a lease for one year of 800 acres whereon the sd. JOHN COTTON now dwells on Meherring Creek, joining the sd. Jones, Cat Tail Branch and Hoskey Path all houses, gardens orchards etc. and is part of a larger tract of land belonging to the sd. Jones

Notes:

Her father was Robert Foster, Deputy Sect of State, Clerk of the Council and leader in Colonial affairs. He resided in Bertie Co., and was a large land and slave owner. Some researchers say Ann died in childbirth, leaving Alexander with 3 small children, youngest named Anne. Robert Foster died 1739.

February 12, 1739-40. May Court, 1740
Item: I also give to the child my daughter Ann is now with, my negro wench Sue.
