" The Fosters were among the early pioneers to settle in the "Forks of James River", where they took an active part in the development of the beautiful valley of Virginia.
William Foster married 14 December, 1763, in Augusta County, Virginia, Mary Gilmore, daughter of Capt. James and Martha (Beaty) Gilmore, who was born about 1742, and died in December, 1769.
William Foster served in the American Revolution, as a soldier in Capt. Matthew Jewett's company, of the Seventh Virginia Regiment, commanded successively by Colonel Alexander McClenachan, Colonel Holt Richeson and Colonel William Heth."
