" The first proved records in this line are in 1740, when a William and James Lane, brothers, moved from Westmoreland to Prince William County, Virginia. to lease adjoining tracts of land from George Turberville, agent of Lord Fairfax.
The two brothers had married sisters, William to Sarah, James to Lydia Hardage, daughters of James Hardage (1680-1749) and his wife Elizabeth ___,
Children of William and Sarah (Hardage) Lane were 1. John (later Dr.) who married Catherine (Newton) Jett, 2. James Hardage Lane (1735-1787) who married Mary Jane Smith, 3. William Lane who married Nancy Bellfield (who married (2) Enoch Smith, and 4. Anny (or Amy) Lane."
