Alphonso Boone crossed the plains in 1846, in company with his family, and after suffering untold hardships, he arrived in Oregon and camped on what is now the site of Corvallis. Later he located a land grant of 640 acres near Butteville. During the gold excitement of California he went to the gold fields and there lost his life November 28, 1849, at the age of 51 years old.
