David DARST:
Notes:
David Darst, the founder of the Darst family in the St. Charles District, was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia, December 18, 1757 and died in St. Charles County, Missouri December 2, 1826. On January 14, 1784 he married in Lincoln County, Kentucky Rosetta Holman who was born January 13, 1763 in Maryland and died November 13, 1848 in Callaway Co. Missouri. Rosetta Holman was the daughter of Henry Holman who lived in Kent County, Maryland as early as 1760, and was killed by the Indians in August 1789, when he was attempting to relieve a beleagured blockhouse in Woodford County, Kentucky, which was surrounded by hostile Indians.
David Darst moved from Virginia to Woodford County, Kentucky in 1784, and in 1798 came with his wife and seven children to what is now St. Charles County, Missouri, settling in a valley of the Missouri River that is yet know as "Darst's Bottom". Some of the leading men of Kentucky gave David Darst complimentary letters of introduction to the Spanish authorities at St. Louis which enabled him to obtain for himself and his children several grants of land.
[Kentucky State Historical Register May 1921, pp. 63-66]
David Darst settled on Spanish Grant number 18, containing 610 acres; his son David Holman Darst settled on Spanish Gran 1643, containing 224 acres; and his son Isaac Darst settled on Grant 1644, containing 297 acres.
David Darst, a Revolutionary soldier, was buried in the old Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Defiance, Missouri where his grave had been marked by the St. Charles Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
